Left 4 Dead 2 Survivor Tips and Strategies

left4dead2survivors

Here are some tips and strategies you should consider when playing as the Survivors. Some may seem obvious, some not.

Have your team on the same page on which Infected to clear first.
For example: Jockey, Hunter, Charger, Smoker, etc. When your team mates know what priorities to follow you will find clearing to be much simpler.

What is clearing? Clearing refers to shooting off a special infected who has somebody pounced/pinned.

Make tanks fight where you are comfortable.
A tank player can be good, but ultimately they can be only as good as their support. When applicable, get your team to a position to ward off any SI attacks and fight the tank where you can have the upper hand.

Make speed and distance your goal.
In the first game it was important to only use your health packs and pills when you found more or if you were desperate. On this game I tend to suggest using at least your pills any time you or your team is moving slowly. The quicker your pace the more distance you cover and less attacks the enemy will get.

Go into rooms cautiously.
I can’t tell you how many times my team has successfully launched an attack and downed all four survivors because they unwittingly entered a room small enough for Spitter goo to cover the entire floor thus dispatching them. Go in as pairs or at least leave one lookout survivor.

Communicate and work as a team.
This is above all the most important rule. Call out Infected as you see or hear them. Call out where you’re pinned or pulled. Call out items as you see them. If you are moving slow let your team know. Communication and teamwork is the most important attribute of a team that is successful at this game.

Left 4 Dead 2 Spitter Guide

December 2nd, 2009 4 comments

l4d2_spitter

Overview
The Spitter can be a powerful part of a good Infected strategy if used properly. By herself she is very weak and nearly useless against a survivor team that is on a constant lookout for this Special Infected. We have compiled some information for you that will hopefully help you not only avoid her wrath more easily as Survivors, but you may also become better at using her in the versus modes.

Hit Points: 100
Main Attack: Acid Spit
Secondary Attack: Scratch

What is the Spitter?
The Spitter is a female Special Infected who spits toxic acid as an Area-of-Effect attack (AOE). She spits on the ground at the feet of the Survivors and will deal lethal damage until they leave the area. When she is killed a pool of acid forms around the body that will also deal damage.

What are some tell-tale signs of the Spitter?
She has a very high-pitched squeal when she spawns and runs around looking for a place to attack. The pool of acid she creates is a near-neon green bubbling puddle that is very hard to miss. The pool of acid is still visible but difficult to see in water and the mud found in Swamp Fever and Hard Rain.

How to defend against the Spitter
The Spitter has very little health (100) so she is easy to kill. After she spits her acidic goo she is very slow to move and run away so you have a good chance to kill her. Clear the common and other Special Infected quickly to be able to spread your group out or move outside the area her acidic pool creates. Do not enter rooms in which you do not have anywhere to climb, leave easily or the acid can cover the entire area. Avoid her spit and the pool around her dead body at all costs as it does deal damage quickly. Do not revive an incapacitated or dead team mate while the Spitter goo is still around.

How to use the Spitter
I have seen some amazing Spitter players and some amazingly terrible players. The best ways to use the Spitter is to initiate an attack or to support an attack. The best times to play support is when other players are covered in Boomer bile or incapacitated.

The Spitter goo can travel a long range depending on the arc you spit, but it will die out quickly and fall straight down once it hits its limitation. The best places to spit are when Survivors are in small rooms, about to go through crowded areas, to ward them into another attack, on gas cans or when they are incapacitated and a team mate is going to try to save them. You can also bounce your spit off ceilings and walls to get those hard to reach areas where there are Survivors. Combine your spit with the other Special Infected to maximize damage potential. Remember that every incapacitation your team deals is worth ten (10) points.

Left 4 Dead 2 Sells 2 Million In 2 Weeks

December 1st, 2009 4 comments

left4dead2survivors

Despite early concerns that it was too soon for a sequel, Left 4 Dead 2 has sold more than 2 million copies at retail, doubling the sales to date of the original game.

Gamers made noise when the sequel to last year’s cooperative survival horror title was announced earlier this year, but the quick follow-up doesn’t seem to have hurt Left 4 Dead 2′s sales figures. More than 2 million copies of the PC and Xbox 360 versions have sold at retail, a figure that doesn’t even take Steam purchases into account. That’s great news for Valve, who in turn have more great news on the way.

“Left 4 Dead 2 is off to a great start with strong support at retail and great reviews from the press,” said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. “Meanwhile the title has already been played by over 1 million Xbox LIVE Gold account holders, and news regarding L4D2 DLC 1 is coming very soon.”

I’d urge our readers to keep their eyes on this site for said DLC news, but that’s no way to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Jimmy Gibbs Jr: The Zombie

November 27th, 2009 6 comments

jimmygibbs

Someone on the official forums found a very special Infected while browsing the population.txt file: common_male_jimmy, otherwise known as the Infected version of Jimmy Gibbs, Jr, the famous Super Cup racecar driver from Dead Center!

The Infected model, which has no known placement naturally in the game, has a thousand health, no gibs, and a set of unique dialogue reactions from the Survivors, including:

* “Sorry about this Mr. Gibbs, but we need your car.” ~ Coach
* “HEY! Jimmy Gibbs!” ~ Coach
* “HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPPP!” ~Ellis
* “Dibs on Gibbs.” ~ Rochelle
* “God damn that Jimmy Gibbs Jr.!” ~Nick

To spawn him yourself, use these commands:

z_forcezombiemodelname common_male_jimmy
z_forcezombiemodel 1

According to the official L4D blog:

We have upgraded our network infrastructure to better accommodate the huge response to L4D2. 360 players will now have lag-free servers. We’ve also added more dedicated servers.

We will continue to monitor the situation and add resources as needed.

Thank you for your patience. Now quit reading this, get out there and kill some zombies!

Some people wonder why L4D2 cannot handle more than four survivors at any one time. Well, this video should be more than enough to tell you why Valve decided to limit it. This little clip shows the chaos that ensues when 16 people are allowed to join a L4D2 server, before it decides to crash.
