The demo will be available to everyone on Nov. PC gamers and Xbox Live Gold members get to check the demo out starting Nov. 3 and people who pre-oder the game will get access to the demo on Oct. 27.

Left 4 Dead 2 will be hitting the PC and Xbox 360 on Nov. 17.

Left 4 Dead 2 Boycott is Now Officially Over!

October 14th, 2009 12 comments

left4dead2_wah

Valve can now breathe a sigh of relief, because the profit-rending, company-crushing behemoth that was the Left 4 Dead 2 boycott has officially been killed. That’s right, Gabe Newell can have the first decent night’s sleep since E3, no longer weeping because a handful of people don’t like more of the game they enjoy.

“The recently released Crash Course was just the start. Future updates will continue to roll in, and 4v4 matchmaking is first in line,” writes boycott leader Agent of Chaos. “Valve has confirmed to us that it’ll be available before the release of L4D2. Also don’t forget, we have another DLC pack confirmed for sometime in the near future and of course, there will be bug fixes. This is as good as it can get people.”

I knew the boycotters would come crawling back in time for the game’s release, and what do we have here? The boycotters save face by claiming that they’ve “accomplished everything they can,” which basically means they got all the whining out of their systems and have probably been too excited by Left 4 Dead 2. It helped that Valve also flew the boycott leaders out to Seattle to have them play the game. I imagine it’s hard to keep on hating after the royal treatment.

So there we go. Another victory for democracy. America is safe once more.

Summary of the Left 4 Dead 2 Australia Ban Case

October 11th, 2009 6 comments

l4d2_australia

Hopefully this will be the last time you hear about this situation, but I can’t guarantee any promises.

You’d have to have lived under a big rock without wifi access to not know of the controversy around Australia’s banning of Left 4 Dead 2. It was decided that the game had excessively high levels of violence and gore directed towards the infected (read: zombies) whom the OFLC classified as ‘living humans infected with a rabies-like virus.’ For this reason, they refused classification, effectively banning the game from seeing store shelves. Many gamers have been up in arms regarding this decision–Australia was the only country to place such a ban on the game.

Valve recently submitted a modified version of the game for classification by the OFLC. This modified version has a significantly less amount of gore. Decapitation and dismemberment were removed, blood splatter is almost completely non-existent, and the ever-ambiguous ‘piles of dead bodies’ issue has been solved by removing dead zombi-, err, rabies-infected living humans, as soon as they hit the ground.

Word from down under early this morning tells us that the OFLC has given a rating of MA15+ to this modified version of Left 4 Dead 2. This means that the game will see Aussie store shelves. In the Classification Board’s report, they made note that this was made possible by the removal of considerable amounts of gore from the gameplay.

Here’s to hoping you’re not an Australian gamer that enjoys mature violence and gore. Sure, now you’ll be able to buy the game, but in this situation, nobody wins.

Left 4 Dead 2: What Was Cut?

October 10th, 2009 6 comments

l4d2

We’re all aware of the massive controversy surrounding the recent banning of the uncut L4D2 in Australia. Bad news. The game has made the MA 15+, but not without some epic changes. Here’s the official word from the Australian Ratings Board:

“The Board notes that the game no longer contains depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment.”

So basically they have cut out all the blood, guts and gore, because there is definitely not any of that in any games currently released under the MA 15+ in Australia now. It’s not like Fallout 3 or Gears of War have graphic depictions of violence, wound detail, dead bodies, or dismemberment (Note the Sarcasm).

This is clear evidence that the system needs a massive overhaul if such massive inconsistencies are to be removed. This overhaul would almost certainly require the introduction of an R 18+ rating for videogames.

Fortunately, there is still a small glimmer of hope that the game will be released in it’s true, most entertaining form, with Valve currently going through the appeal process to get the game released. Fingers crossed guys!
