Valve has revealed a new campaign which will appear in Left 4 Dead 2. It will be called Swamp Fever.

Swamp Fever is the only other campaigned mentioned so far apart from The Parish. There are three more to be revealed. During E3, Valve stated that the AI Director will have control over the weather, and can summon a rainstorm without warning.

Those attending the San Diego Comic Con will be able to play “Swamp Fever” at the EA Gaming Lounge, which will be located at the Hilton San Diego Gaslamp Quarter Hotel on 401 K. Street.

Valve “Trying To Work Out” Cross-Game Play Between L4D1 & 2

July 6th, 2009 No comments

left4dead-both

Valve’s VP of Marketing, Doug Lombardi has revealed to TVG that the developer is looking at providing cross-game play between the original Left 4 Dead and its incoming sequel.

Such a feature, which would allow players of the original Left 4 Dead to play alongside other users running Left 4 Dead 2, is one of the demands made by the now 37,000 member strong Left 4 Dead 2 boycott group on Steam.

“That’s something that we’re trying to work out the details of right now,” Lombardi said of the cross-game play feature. “So nothing specific to say today, but we understand that it’s a very valid thing to be working on and looking at.”

On the MOD front, Lombardi revealed that Valve is building Left 4 Dead 2 with the aim of allowing MODs to be easily transferable between L4D1 and L4D2:

“With the MOD stuff, if you’re making stuff for Left 4 Dead it will work in Left 4 Dead 2 with very minor amounts of work to bring it over. So we feel we’ve made good steps on that side and now we’re looking at how we manage that for folks who buy the first game and sequel.”

Doug Lombardi of Valve has confirmed and revealed that a Left 4 Dead 2 demo is on its way for both the Xbox 360 and PC platforms.

He also stated that people who pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2 will receive early access to the demo as a bonus.

No date has been revealed for either of these demos, but the game is set to be released in November, so it’d likely be before that.

The Charger – A New Special Infected in L4D2

July 6th, 2009 No comments

the-charger

The Charger is among one of the new special infected who will be making an appearance in Left 4 Dead 2. Described by many as a “one-armed ram,” the Charger’s primary strength is speed. Valve decided to add in the Charger to defeat camping tactics by rushing into Survivors who are packed in a crowded tight group. This will eliminate the act of having Survivors camping together in a corner, which was one of the problems that was in the original Left 4 Dead. The Charger has a charging attack (sort of like how a Hunter charges a pounce) and can rush Survivors like a bull to knock them over in a line. The Charger then picks up last person knocked over and slams him/her repeatedly into the ground. This disables that Survivor, who can only be helped by his/her teammates.

The Charger can be said to be sort of a “mini-Tank.” Though it’s definitely not as bulked as a Tank, the Charger has a gigantic torso with an enormous right arm and an oddly shaped head. His left arm is tiny and all shriveled up. As far as clothing goes, from pictures it looks like he wears a pair of busted overalls.

There have been some sources claiming the Charger has 500 HP, however, this cannot be confirmed as of yet. The Charger is immune from bashing, so killing him will not be as easy as you think. When playing as the Charger, it would probably be more adviseable to attack Survivors when they’re closely grouped together.

The Charger can spawn multiple times per chapter, and can spawn at the same time as a Tank. He is playable in Versus and will be added to the standard lineup of special infected. It’s not clear how often he will spawn or if multiple Chargers can exist simultaneously, but more information will be found as it’s given.

GameSpot’s Left 4 Dead 2 Hands-On Preview

l4d2-boxart

Popular video game website GameSpot.com had the oppurtunity to try out and play Left 4 Dead 2. They took the time to write up a preview, and it’s definitely worth reading.

While Left 4 Dead 2 was one of the biggest hits at this year’s E3, the post-event backlash has almost threatened to overshadow the game itself. Despite the hostility from its usually loyal fan base, developer Valve decided to let us play even more of the game upon its visit to London yesterday. We wasted no time putting our questions to Valve’s Doug Lombardi, as well as taking more than a few runs through the New Orleans level on both the Xbox 360 and PC.

First of all, it’s worth noting just how similar Left 4 Dead 2 is to the original game in terms of gameplay. While there are plenty of subtle changes that fans will notice, the meat of the game is exactly the same as before. You play in a team of four through various movie-inspired levels, taking on the zombie horde that stand between you and your extraction. The concept is simple: If you stick together, it’s easier to stay alive, but if you play as a lone gunman, you’ll die faster while sabotaging your team.

The level we played was called The Parish and followed on from the same mission that we saw at E3 exactly one month ago. Like the original Left 4 Dead, each level is presented with a movie poster, and this level’s tagline was “This time it all goes South.” It’s a reference to the level’s location in New Orleans, where you fight it out in a suburban setting before crossing a bridge to make it to an escape helicopter.

So what’s actually been changed for this sequel? Well, the most obvious new addition was the melee combat, with frying pans and axes available in the demo we played. They were only effective within close proximity to the enemy, but, boy, are they effective when you are. The axe is capable of lopping off limbs (dismemberment is another new feature of the game), while the pan makes a highly satisfying thud on impact. The most interesting melee weapon has yet to be shown–the chainsaw is an amazing prospect, so Valve is making us wait until later in the year before we get our hands on it.

Luckily, we were able to sink our teeth into plenty of other new features. There are now weapon upgrades available at random points in the game–we came across an incendiary upgrade that made our machine gun bullets set fire on impact. You only get about 50 of these fire-spewing shots per upgrade, but they certainly make short work of the standard zombies. Then there’s the brutal new enemy called the Charger, who picks you up and slams you to the ground repeatedly until your teammates come to rescue you.

The game was at its most tense during the gauntlet run–a term Valve used to explain the bridge section at the end of the level we played. Basically, a never-ending mass of zombies stand between you and the escape helicopter, so you have to work with your teammates to fend off the horde while slowly making your way across the bridge. Despite a liberal amount of gun turrets and ammo stockpiles, it’s incredibly difficult to make it across, and if one of your team members die, there’s no way to bring him back into the game. No wonder we died a few times trying to make it across here, but we loved the difference this made to the end of the level, as well as the tension it created.

l4d2_zombies
The inhabitants of New Orleans are not pleased to see you.

Valve was cagey about the difficulty level that was set up for our demonstration; but whatever Valve selected, it was damn hard. On our first run-through, we barely made it to the first safe house. On our second run-through, we made it about halfway across the bridge. On our final attempt, this time on the PC rather than Xbox 360, only one of our teammates made it to the helicopter–the rest of us died trying to get there. As hardened Left 4 Dead players, we found it a little bit frustrating, but it was no less addictive for the jump in difficulty.

Left 4 Dead 2 is shaping up really well, and with four new characters, the group dynamic has changed once again. We played as Coach, a huge dude with an attitude; and Rochelle, a smaller female character. There was also the white-suited Nick and the jocklike Ellis. We loved our time with the game, especially playing with other journalists in the LAN setting. While Left 4 Dead 2 certainly doesn’t do anything drastically different, we’re confident that it will offer another highly addictive experience of the zombie apocalypse. The full game is out on the PC and Xbox 360 in November, and we should be able to bring you more between now and its release.

What’s Going to Happen to the Old Special Infected?

July 6th, 2009 No comments

l4d-specialinfected

Left 4 Dead 2 will be bringing a few new special infected to the game. But is there any word on anything happening to the old special infected?

No, not really. All special infected in the original Left 4 Dead will be making an appearance in Left 4 Dead 2. This includes the Hunter, Smoker, Witch, Boomer, and Tank, if you have forgotten already.

Here’s the good part. It has been confirmed that there will be different variations of these old special infected, where a Smoker or Hunter has mutated, giving it slightly different abilities. That’s all the information that has been revealed so far, but it’s definitely something to know about.

Left 4 Dead 2 Gameplay Videos

July 6th, 2009 No comments

These videos aren’t the newest, but still very well worth watching if you haven’t yet seen them already.

“Stop The Alarm”

The below video displays the Survivors alerting the alarm, and making their way through hordes of infected to stop it. This is something new in L4D2 that isn’t in the original L4D. Instead of alerting a horde and waiting it out by fighting a horde, you’ll have to move to another part of the map to press something that would stop it. I can definitely say it makes things a tad more interesting.

“Axe Ownage”

The axe is a new melee weapon that will appear in Left 4 Dead 2. It’s going to be a hell lot of fun to use.

“Fire Ammo”

Also known as “incendiary rounds,” fire ammo will set the zombies you shoot at on fire. The below video shows how it works.

“Frying Pan Domination”

What could be more entertaining than smacking zombies on the head with a frying pan?

“General Environment Videos”

The following videos below just show general gameplay of Left 4 Dead 2 and some of the environments within the game.

Meet the Left 4 Dead 2 Survivors

July 5th, 2009 1 comment

left_4_dead_2_survivors

Left 4 Dead 2 is set in the south, a journey from Savannah Georgia to New Orleans Louisiana. With the new game setting we are introduced to a new set of survivors. Valve is trying to open up the L4D world and impart to players that this infection thing is big. So while Francis, Zoey, Bill, and Louis are doing battle in Philadelphia; these four are fighting the infected in the southern swamplands…

Nick

l4d2_nick

Lured by fast money and river boat gambling, con man Nick made a stop in Georgia. There’s always another con just a little further down the road, Nick never intended to make Savannah his final stop. Then again the Zombie apocalypse wasn’t part of his plan either.

Hugh Dillon of Flashpoint plays Nick.

Rochelle

l4d2_rochelle

Producer for a cable news network, Rochelle was sent into Savannah to cover what would turn out to be the outbreak. Rochelle finds herself right in the middle of the chaos, not being one to let live slip away she grabs a gun and meets the infection head on.

Rochelle Aytes of White Chicks plays Rochelle.

Coach

l4d2_coach

After a knee injury ended his athletic dreams, this ex-defensive lineman turned to teaching. Coach is now pushing 40 and wishing he’d taken better care of that knee, but who knew that one day he would have to run for his life in the face of the ever growing zombie hoard? Coach has developed an extreme hatred of the Zombies, the Witch in particular.

Chad L. Coleman of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles plays Coach.

Ellis

l4d2_ellis

Brash, cocky, and indestructible. This 21 year old mechanic and Savannah native isn’t scarred of some infection. Ellis enthusiastically replaces his Miller High Life with a gun and heads out into the fray.

Eric Ladin of Generation Kill plays Ellis.

Electronic Arts Mentioned As Left 4 Dead 2 Distributor

July 5th, 2009 No comments

ea-logo

To summarize everything below, Electronic Arts is rumored to be a distributor of Left 4 Dead 2. Although it’s not confirmed, there are some reliable sources that state they are.

Despite Valve being conspicuously cagey about its retail distribution plans for its next title, Left 4 Dead 2, multiple online mentions of the game by Electronic Arts this week essentially confirm that the ongoing distribution agreement between the two companies remains intact.

This week, rumors circulated that Left 4 Dead 2 might be heading to PlayStation 3 as well as PC and Xbox 360, its predecessor’s platforms, after a PS3 box shot mockup appeared on EA’s official site.

Valve later confirmed, however, that the game is only in development for PC and Xbox 360, and the EA thumbnail was removed.

Today, a Comic-Con-related press email sent by Electronic Arts to various outlets including Gamasutra included a mention of Left 4 Dead 2, further solidifying the connection.

During E3, Gamasutra asked multiple Valve employees about the game’s publishing situation, but did not get a concrete answer at the time, with indications from the firm that Valve was shopping the game around.

“We don’t have a publisher to name yet,” said marketing VP Doug Lombardi at the time. “We’re talking to folks about it.”

Gamasutra has sought additional confirmation from EA, but has not yet received a response.
